Gipsy Kings’ Savor Flamenco (Knitting Factory Records) and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Live: Singing for Peace Around the World  were chosen as joint winners in the Best World Music Album category at last night’s Grammy awards.

From a nominated field of four, the Gipsy Kings and legendary South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo shared the top prize. The two other nominations included Femi Kuti’s No Place for My Dream (another Knitting Factory release) and the late Ravi Shankar’s The Living Room Sessions Part 2 (East Meets West Music).

Nominated for a record sixth time in the Best World Music Album category, Gipsy Kings celebrated their 25th anniversary last year,  and their ninth studio album, Savor Flamenco, finally earned them the coveted music prize. Read our interview with the group in the Nov/Dec 2013 (#96) edition, where Savor Flamenco was also a Top of the World selection.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Live: Singing for Peace Around the World is dedicated to the late Nelson Mandela and proceeds of all albums purchased on their website will be donated to the former president’s charity, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The award was the group’s fourth Grammy.
